We're being told that learning to play keyboard is a great activity to keep the mind young,  I'm here to tell you that I see this in my life every week.  You see, I am a music teacher. I live in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia and I teach many seniors, who are my inspiration.

Victoria is a favorite place for Canadians to retire.  We've got plenty of seniors here! Why? Well simply put, it's the best place in Canada to live. The weather is temperate.  We do not have the extremes of cold or hot that most of the country experiences.  We live on an island on the west coast (we have a rain forest) and there are flowers everywhere (check out The Butchart Gardens).  Cruise ships stop here on the way to Alaska.  The place is terrific.

Back to my point.  I teach many seniors.  I have students who are well into their 80's.  I've taught up to age 90 so far and I've seen how the study of music has contributed to their youthful brains.

It has been said that, unlike the body, the brain continues to grow, produce new neurons, and remains alert.  IT STAYS YOUNG!

You too can exercise your gray matter and YOU CAN RETURN TO THAT TIME WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU WOULD DO GREAT THINGS. It is never too late.

I have taught students who have lost memory due to stroke and were able to regain some of their abilities just by studying piano.  Now I'm not promising you can too, but I am saying that you can have a fun experience and perhaps polish up those neurons and get them working again.

You know, you use different parts of your brain when you see music, hear music, and play music.  When you see your fingers playing the notes you are using some brain cells and when you play the notes without looking you are using other cells.  You use different cells when you memorize and when you play by ear.

It's easy to see how you put your brain to work.  But know what? It doesn't have to be difficult and painful.

My goal has been to teach my students how to play for their own enjoyment. When we were kids and took lessons we were told we had to practice for at least an hour a day and it was serious business.  After all our moms and dads had to pay "good money" for our lessons and so we had to make sure we did good and please them.  It doesn't have to be that way and I do not subscribe to that regiment.

I have designed a set of DVD's which will awaken the various parts of your brain and at the same time will instruct you how to play your favorite songs.  But before you order I invite you to preview a couple of my short  clips by clicking here and I also want you to visit our interactive Twitter site (PianoForSeniors) to see what others are saying about the system and to our blog, to participate in our questions and suggestions.
